Sloppy Joes

I mean, come on. Who doesn’t like a Sloppy Joe? A messy and flavorful American staple if you ask me.

Okay, maybe not a staple, but growing up in my household they were. If it wasn’t a sloppy Joe, it was a casserole (mind you, we are from Alabama and are about as southern as they come). My mother’s love (and lack of cooking knowledge..sorry mom) for easy, one pan dishes is the exact reason you don’t see a lot of them on my food blog… there’s nothing I hate more than a casserole.

But sloppy Joe? I can work with that. I tried my hardest to gourmet-ify it. I also made it much healthier than the traditional can of sugar you are used to dumping into ground beef and calling it a meal.

So, that’s what I did. And what do ya know, these turned out better than I could have ever expected.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 140 grams onion diced
  • 175 grams red bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 lb 93/7 ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup ketchup Great Value Organic is my favorite

  • 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Add the olive oil, onion and peppers to a pan over medium heat. Cook until slightly translucent and then add the garlic. Cook until fragrant.

What kind of buns would you recommend if you’re counting macros?

Daves Killer are my favorite! https://www.daveskillerbread.com/burger-buns-done-right But if you are looking for lower carbs, I LOVE Arnold’s sandwich thins! https://www.target.com/p/arnold-multigrain-sandwich-thins-12oz/-/A-12935868?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000012732781&CPNG=PLA_Grocery%2BShopping_Local%7CGrocery_Ecomm_Food_Bev&adgroup=SC_Grocery&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=9010836&targetid=aud-554348709499:pla-455236921419&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1248099&gclid=Cj0KCQjw852XBhC6ARIsAJsFPN2TWmjn6PlW53u33qCFN5gXCiIdJc2vQ3U4m1IpqfzX6PK10aZNvIMaAlAOEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

My husband and I just made these for the first time and couldn’t believe how delicious they were! We used Kinder’s Zero Sugar Cali Gold BBQ sauce and topped it with a barely there amount of shredded Parmesan on a sesame bun. Perfect healthier comfort food alternative that can be enjoyed by adults and kids alike. The best part is how simple and easy this recipe is to make. Will definitely make again!

Notice how a majority of the meals here are nutrient dense, whole foods? Yet, still I hear clients or people who have a similar diet fear eating something like pizza. It’s just pizza.

It wasn’t a “free meal” it wasn’t a “cheat meal” it was just a slice of pizza because I was simply hungry after dinner.

One of the biggest reasons I think people fear items like sweets, pizza, etc. is because they place restrictions on foods. When you live your life in balance, there’s no restrictions, there’s no food guilt. There’s just pizza. Simple as that.

If you’re having a hard time with balance, try cutting out the restrictions instead of more foods.

Maintenance is not a free for all or excuse to stop focusing on healthy habits.

Every year, I have clients who crush a deficit phase because they make some awesome lifestyle changes.

When a client comes back to me and says they “fell off the wagon at maintenance”, it’s usually because they stopped being diligent about their habits.

Just so we are clear, lifestyle habits meant FOR LIFE, not just for a deficit. So the healthy habits you build during a deficit, like meal prepping, pre logging, going for walks, sticking to a workout routine, getting adequate water, fiber, sleep and rest days still need to be the focus at maintenance.

What are some habits from a deficit that you keep with you year round?

Crazy to look back and see the place where I once was; frustrated, tired, overwhelmed and wondering why nothing I was doing was working.

Looking back, it’s nuts to me why I didn’t try the one thing I hadn’t tried all those years, eat more.

If you’re struggling and find yourself eating less and less while only doing more and more to try to see a change in your physique, I feel you. I’ve been there.

It takes learning the science and evidence based protocol to make long lasting changes.

My life now is so much more than searching for abs in a mirror. My goals are not physique driven, but rather health driven which ironically has led me to “look” better than ever. I build balanced meals, live at maintenance and focus on progressive overload with @movesbymadeline workouts.

If you’re stuck, let me help you. DM me for information on coaching. Link in bio to purchase.

Do you struggle with adherence during deficits? You might not be planning them for the best time during the year.

A deficit isn’t meant to be had before every event, beach trip and bachelorette party you have. It’s a specific time to focus on fat loss. The events and plans you have during a deficit can effect your overall adherence.

Use a calendar to help you better plan for and adhere to a deficit!
